Synopsis
The story of discovering mushroom dyes, through the recollections of Dorothy Beebee. As an artist and friend to Miriam Rice -- who laid the foundation for mushroom dyes with the publication of the first mushroom dye book in the 1970’s -- Dorothy retells the excitement of their discoveries, the trials of publication, and her hopes for the future of mushroom dyes. About the film Martin and Myra Beebee are a brother and sister team who created this film to celebrate their mother’s inspiring story as a fiber artist and scientific illustrator, and who was directly involved in the history of the development of mushrooms as a source of natural dyes. Dorothy Beebee agreed to be interviewed to share the exciting story of her friend Miriam Rice’s comprehensive research into mushroom dyes and the publication of three groundbreaking books. But what began as filming a simple mother-daughter conversation, with her son behind the camera, turned into a two-year project as the idea developed to create a short documentary. Learning new filmmaking skills during each stage of development, this film is a labor of love from two children who wanted to celebrate their mother’s achievements as an artist, and to cast light onto this important slice of nature dye history.
