Photographing Mushrooms

Picture
Alan Franck wrote up a great guide for things to consider when photographing mushrooms. He provides a list of considerations along with photographs that illustrate the points.

Even if you're not interested in photography, the list of characteristics and observations that one should make will help you to become better at identifying mushrooms.

You can find the guide on the FunDiS website here: https://fundis.org/resources/blog/145-photography-of-macrofungi

Mushroom Dyes
Mushrooms can produce dyes in colors, from yellows to orange to brown, to red, and even greens, blues and purples!

The key go-to resource is the International Mushroom Dye Institute (IMDI) website at  www.mushroomsforcolor.com
Here you will find the history of mushrooms for pigment pioneered by Miriam Rice here on the Mendocino Coast. The website will guide you to books, films and other resources for furthering your study and interest.

You can delve deeper into the life and work of Miriam Rice and her husband, Ray, on this site, which was lovingly curated by their daughter, Felicia:

DVD set: Mushrooms for Color and Papermaking with Polypores This DVD presentation, an excellent addition to the book Mushrooms for Dyes, Paper, Pigments & Myco-Stix™ by Miriam C. Rice, combines two videos, produced in 1988 and 1993 respectively. Using extensive footage of Rice working around her home in the mushroom-rich environs of Mendocino, California, Dyeing with Fungi chronicles more than 20 years of her research and offers a fascinating glimpse into her methods for extracting the full spectrum of colors she discovered, as well as the excitement generated by her finds in the fibre arts community worldwide. This history of Miriam Rice’s work is followed by Papermaking with Polypores, a step-by-step guide demonstrated by Rice herself, to the method she developed for making truly gorgeous papers from mushrooms. 40 minutes, NTSC format, region-free. $24.95

Dorothy Beebee's daughter, Myra Beebee, has a wonderful website that shows her work with mushroom dyes (as well as other natural dyes.)
