Billy has been successfully hunting morels for the past eight years in California, Oregon, Idaho and his native Michigan, and will share his thoughts and tips for how to hunt for these delectable and elusive morsels. What he'll cover in the talk: * morel hunting near and/or far * when to go look, timing! * how to read weather and temp patterns * soil temps * where to look * how to find environment: trees, temps, skids, micro climates etc... * where to stay * permits and laws around collecting * burns vs. naturals * what to bring * how to pick, store and dry * other indicator fungal species to be aware of. * other edible species often in the same area * how to respectfully share and request tips from others about morel fruiting Meeting Recording - Part 1 Meeting Recording - Part 2 April 9: CLUB MEETING Location: First Presbyterian Church of Fort Bragg & Zoom Speakers: Lama Nasser-Gammett Topic: Local Mushroom Cultivation: The Forest People Mushroom cultivation can provide large quantities of nutritionally dense food with very few inputs. This can be done in a small space with relatively little water usage on a number of different substrates. With the climate challenges our world is currently facing, it is imperative that we disengage from the exploitative agricultural system, instead looking for local, sustainable ways to nourish our bodies. Lama will share her family’s story as The Forest People, a small-scale oyster mushroom cultivation business that’s grown thousands of pounds of mushrooms for their community. |

Tom Jelen
Tom Jelen has been a forager all his life. He grew up in a small town in Wisconsin, where he graduated from UWEC in Social Work. Tom lived in the small town of Ellsworth, Wisconsin as a kid. His family had a cottage on Lake Pepin where her foraged for berries and wild nuts, but was barred from picking mushrooms, as his mother was sure it would kill him. He started hunting mushrooms when he moved to Fort Bragg in 2005 and has been an avid forager ever since. He has had the great good fortune to call David Arora a friend and has foraged with him many times.
Tom took the reins as Chair of the MCMC a year into the pandemic and has been trying to keep the Club together and bring interesting experts to speak to and do events with mushroom experts from all over.
At The December meeting, we will be demystifying the Amanita muscaria mushroom with a hands-on cooking demo and tasting. The mushrooms will be thoroughly detoxified, and we'll put some out for folks to try. This is a technique that I learned from David Arora, who, as with many things, pioneered the expansion and the understanding of the Amanita muscaria mushroom. Here is a link to the published paper by David and his friend and colleague William Rubel:
A Study of Cultural Bias in Field Guide Determinations of Mushroom Edibility Using the Iconic Mushroom, Amanita muscaria, as an Example.

Billy Sprague
BILLY SPRAGUE is a local here in Fort Bragg, CA and member of the MCMC since it’s inception. Around that time Sprague became an avid mushroom hunter pooling expertise from our club's members, Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast book and seasoned hunting mentors. Sprague curated a world of fungi around him by infusing them into his art, diet and social practices—using mushroom illustrations from vintage mushroom books to create collage works, creating a mushroom foraging knife and brush combination that enhances the harvesting process and creating a forage friendly “Shroom Shack” for fellow mushroom and foraging enthusiasts who visit the Mendocino Coast area. Shroom Shack is used as a home base and place to share and trade foraging tips and current intel on what's happening in the surrounding forests.
He sells his fresh and dried mushrooms to locals who can’t get into the woods or don’t have the time to hunt them down, often swapping forage stories and recipes along the way. Sprague also leads forays focusing on edible, medicinal and dye mushrooms and proper harvest and woodland etiquette procedures.

April 19: LAST MEETING OF THE SEASON
This Tuesday April 19th will be our last meeting until next September. We don't have a guest speaker for this meeting, but one of the things I'd like to do is get suggestions from the membership on who they'd like to see as presenters for the next season and what topics you'd like to see covered. There are lots of fascinating subjects being researched out there in Mycoworld and I will put a link to a timely and interesting subject at the end of this email. Please don't stay away just because we don't have a speaker. Your input and discussion is just as important and will help us keep the meetings engaging and meaningful. We still need someone or a couple of someones to help us with our membership duties, specifically some very basic bookkeeping. We have a description of what is needed and I'll share that with anybody that would like to help us out. The "job" (not really a job per say) only requires a couple of hours per week in the busiest part of the season. I want to thank all of our members for keeping our Club motivating and viable. It hasn't been easy, through this awful pandemic, but with your continued enthusiasm, I think we've had some of our best meetings ever. We are crossing our fingers that come September we will be able to gather in person, but I'd like to keep the Zoom connection going, so that folks who can't be here in the flesh, could still join us when we get together. It was a great mushroom season this year and I'm very hopeful that we'll have rain and a good year next season too! So please join us Tuesday April 19th for our last meeting of the year. - Tom Jelen Meeting Recording |

It is time to question the standard lore about mushroom cookery. Beliefs about how to handle and cook mushrooms, where they fit into a meal, and even what mushrooms are good to eat seem driven more by superstition and tradition than by an understanding of their flavors, aromas, and chemistry. This presentation will take a more modern look at their cooking. The audience should learn some useful tools to breathe new life into their mushroom cooking, with the help of some easy, delicious recipes anyone can try at home. This presentation is meant to be very interactive, with questions encouraged throughout.
Bio:
Chad Hyatt is both a highly knowledgeable mushroom hunter and a classically trained chef, based out of the San Francisco Bay Area. He recently released an innovative new wild mushroom cookbook, The Mushroom Hunter’s Kitchen. Chad frequently teaches wild mushroom cookery at private and public events, does wild mushroom pop-up dinners, and leads mushroom walks. His unique perspective and knowledge base have made Chad a fixture at wild mushroom related events around the US in recent years. In this presentation, Chad will share some recipes from his book, to introduce some fun and delicious new applications and cooking techniques that you can try at home. If all goes well, this should change the way you think about cooking mushrooms.

Edible Mushrooms of the Lanna Kingdom
Northern Thailand, a collection of nine provinces in the far northern part of the country is unique in several fascinating ways. The region is very mountainous, and borders both Myanmar and Laos, jutting up into the center of the SE Asian peninsula. Centered around the largest city in the area, Chiang Mai, the area was once the powerful Lanna Kingdom (1269-1558), and remained locally administered until it's last king died in 1939. Not surprisingly, the food and cultures of Northern Thailand is unique. Forest management and foraging is a big part of its history, rich in various Hill Tribes (cuisines/customs) that have moved from China and around the SE Asian peninsula and operated as small communities outside of the kingdoms themselves.
This talk is an opportunity to join me on my journey as I recount my explorations of the (mostly wild) edible mushrooms in Northern Thailand, the culture of foraging & cooking, with language and recipes woven in, through the eyes of a curious chef. Thailand is an emerging myco-region, so it is a special time to be here, helping to bring more attention to the incredible edible mycoflora of the world.

Fire and Fungi in California: Past, Present, and Future
Every aspect of life in California is shaped by fire, and fungi are no exception. Some fungi are famous for their relationship to fire (morels, anyone?) but what about the rest of them? And what is happening with our fungi as the pattern and intensity of fires continue to change? There are many unknowns.
In this talk, Thea covers a basic history of fire in California, discusses the ecology of fire, plant communities and fungal communities, introduces some of the fire-adapted fungi with which we are rapidly becoming acquainted, and talks about what we might see in the future.
Thea is a lifelong Sierra Nevada foothill resident and naturalist. Her childhood interest in local mushrooms, wildlife, and flora has transformed into a lifelong devotion to the natural world. She earned her BS in forestry from UC Berkeley while pursuing her passion for fungal taxonomy in the Berkeley mycology labs, and since then has spent her time exploring the California mountains and the organisms that call them home. She currently works for the Forest Service on a long term, state-wide meadow monitoring project. Though she now spends her summer days identifying sedges and other wetland plants, she has never stopped looking for mushrooms. She continues to be particularly fascinated by the fungi of the Sierra Nevada and other mountains of California, and is currently working on a field guide to mushrooms of these understudied regions.

Over the past 35 years, these mushrooms have taken me on this journey.”

Mendocino Coast Mushroom Club Presents
Christian Schwarz: The Most Dangerous Fungi in the World: A Mycological Study in Risk Assessment
As mushroomers, we spend a lot of time learning how to avoid deadly mushrooms when we are picking for the table.
And generally, we're very good at it! We go on picking merrily and enjoying our time with each other and the forest around us. But what if our efforts need to be re-examined, broadened, and refocused? We'll use the world of fungi as a lens to explore how our intuitions about risk and danger should adapt in a world that is rapidly changing.
Christian Schwarz is a naturalist currently living in Santa Cruz, the land of milk (caps) and honey (mushrooms). He studied Ecology and Evolution at UCSC, and now spends his time photographing, teaching about, collecting, and researching macrofungi. He is coauthor of Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast. Fungi satisfy his curiosity with their seemingly endless forms – from the grotesque to the bizarre to the sublimely beautiful. Besides dabbling in mushroom taxonomy, he loves fish, plants, nudibranchs, moths, and dragonflies. He is and passionate about citizen science, especially iNaturalist.

Medicinal Mushrooms Talk
Saturday, Nov 9, from 2:00PM -4:00PM
The Mendocino Coast Mushroom Club presents a talk by Lisa Matthews on the Medicinal Value of Mushrooms.
Lisa's love for mushrooms grew out of a lifelong love for the natural world. Her own natural curiosity lead her to start researching what it is about mushrooms that can make them taste and smell so wonderfully different. In the process, she discovered that mushrooms have far more to offer us in terms of healing and nutrition then most of us believe, even the gourmet ones. She looks forward to sharing her fascinating discoveries with you and hopes to inspire you to get out into the woods, alone or with others, and forage for yourselves.
Mushroom Tasting Sampler
Saturday, Nov 9, from 5:00PM -7:00PM
Members and friends of the Mendocino Coast Mushroom Club are pleased to offer visitors a taste of our local, wild mushrooms. We’ll have an array of both sweet a savory treats for visitors to sample from 5:00PM-7:00PM at the Ford House Museum. Come and see how versatile and delectable mushrooms can be.
Mushroom Identification for Beginners
Sunday, Nov 10, from 11:00AM-1:00PM
Mendocino County forests are abloom with an abundance of mushrooms in the fall and winter, and knowing which ones are edible versus simply interesting takes some training. Learn the basic taxonomic identifying features that distinguish mushrooms from each other, where each unique mushroom species can be found, when they can be found, and the myths associated with them from naturalist and mycologist, Mario Abreu. Mario also offers mushroom walks and a more in-depth mushroom ID workshop at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens during the months of November and December.

2019 Continental Mycoblitz, Part 2
Meeting Date: Wednesday, October 23, 2019
Time: 11:00 am to 4:00 pm Venue: Ford House, 45035 Main Street, Mendocino A small group of us set out to see if we could find anything novel during the Continental Mycoblitz. Despite fairly dry conditions and many moldy and/or desiccated mushrooms, we were able to find over 20 species. We spent some time, post-foray, attempting to identify them all. A species list, as recorded and annotated by Jim Gibson (Thanks, Jim!) is available here. While the pickin’s were slim, a good time was had by all. |
Continental Mycoblitz 2019
1. Amanita augusta 2. Amanita calyptroderma 3. Amanita gemmata *(we found several of these but never ID'd them) 4. Amanita pachycolea *(constricta) 5. Annulohypoxylon thouarsianum - Carbon Balls 6. Cantharellus formosus 7. Cantharellus subalbidus 8. Fistulina hepatica 9. Fomitopsis pinicola - Red Belted conk 10. Gomphus clavatus 11. Hydnellum sp. 12. Lactarius spp. 13. Lactarius arrillacei var. megacarpus (grows under Live oaks occasionally Tan Oaks... I think this should be L. kauffmanii due to habitat; see comments in MRC p.263.) |
14. Leucoagericus rubrotinctus/Lepiota cristata
15. Nidula sp. 16. Phaeolus schweinitzii 17. Pleurotus ostreatus -oyster mushroom 18. Pluteus exilis -deer mushrom 19. Postia sp. 20. Ramaria acrisiccescens (Ramarias are difficult but I left all as called) 21. Ramaria formosa 22. Russula spp. 23. Russula fragrantissima 24. Russula mendocinensis 25. Russula versicolor- (I don't think this was it, as it grows under Birch trees and that species doesn't grow where we were). |

2019 Mushroom Festival Happenings
Wild Mushroom Display
Date: Every day in November and December
Time: 11:00 am to 4:00 pm
Venue: Ford House, 45035 Main Street, Mendocino
Members of the mushroom club hunt our local forests to gather wild mushrooms and they are carefully inspected, identified and displayed by naturalist, Mario Abreu. See below for how you can help Mario maintain a beautiful, bountiful display.
Ford House Mushroom Display Guidelines for contributing specimens
Mario Abreu maintains the live mushroom display at the Ford House, which is on view during November and December.
In order to make the mushroom display interesting he adds and removes mushroom species as needed and found.
Mario asks MCMC members if they could help by bringing fresh mushroom species in good form to the Ford House for him to select from to build the display.
Here’s a brief set of guidelines for MCMC members who would like to supply him with mushrooms for the Ford House Mushroom Display.
· All donated mushrooms should be of good quality. Ideally, young mushrooms that are just beginning to open and will last for several days are wanted. However, shelf and conks can be older.
· All mushrooms should be cleaned of litter and soil debris as best or appropriate for each one.
· All mushrooms should be identified and labelled if possible.
· All mushrooms should be brought to the Ford House and placed into the black plastic crates provided adjacent to the display. Please ask a Ford House volunteer show you the storage location.
· Separate mushrooms using paper bags or waxed bags. Please don’t stack mushrooms on top of each other in the same crate.
· Please don’t add mushrooms to the existing display. Mario will select them from the crates.
Mario's contact info. is [email protected], 707.937.3155 should you have any questions or would like to inform him that you have dropped off mushrooms. Your time and donation of mushrooms is greatly appreciated.

March 2019 meeting of the Mendocino Coast Mushroom Club
Guest Speaker: Thea Chesney
Meeting Date: Monday, March 18, 2019
Time: 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Venue: Ford House, 45035 Main Street, Mendocino
General Club meeting - All are welcome.
Mendocino Coast Mushroom Club Presents
Thea Chesney: Mushrooming in the Sierra Nevada (and beyond)
Many coastal mushroom hunters in California know the mountains as a spot to visit for morels and porcini in the spring, but there is so much more to find! From snowbanks in early spring to meadows at the peak of summer to the foothills in fall and winter, I will describe the many habitats and seasons of the mountains, and show some of the wonderful mushroom diversity they hold. I will also give a basic introduction to mushroom ecology, discuss the limits of our knowledge of montane fungi, and encourage folks to help with citizen science efforts to document what's out there.
Thea Chesney is a lifelong Sierra Nevada foothill resident and naturalist.

He presented an engaging video showing his process and the mushrooms, including lion's mane, shiitake and turkey tails, that he grows and sells. He discussed the precautions he takes for preventing contamination and the conditions required for optimal growth. Club members were very interested to learn about this process and appreciated being able to purchase fresh mushrooms after the talk. We are working with Trout to organize a cultivation workshop for the future.

2017/2018 Season
Mushroom Dye Exhibit & Demonstration
The Mushroom Dye Exhibit and Workshop were a great success!! Many thanks to Dorothy Beebee and Nancy Denison, for sharing their wealth of knowledge, history and materials on the subject. In 15 minutes, Dorothy provided the forty year history of making colors from mushrooms, which was started right here in Mendocino by her friend, Miriam Rice! She prepared two pots of dye using mushrooms (cortinarius semisanguineus and phaeolus schweinitzii) that yielded dusky rose and golden hues. Fifteen participants tied, twisted, knotted and rubber-banded silk or silk-wool blend scarves that went into the dye pots to create their own unique designs. Many more came to watch and take in the exhibit. Hopefully the participants, who came from Reno, Fortuna, the Bay Area and right here at home, will be inspired to continue the experiment Miriam started with mushrooms for color. Our continued gratitude to the Ford House Museum for hosting us and the event, in addition to our monthly meetings.
